One Orchestra, Every Scale: Great Lakes Philharmonic is a professional orchestra built to move between scales — from the hushed intimacy of a string serenade to the full weight of a symphonic tutti. We choose the forces each work demands rather than forcing every program into one shape: fifteen strings for a Baroque concerto grosso, a full complement of winds, brass, and percussion for Beethoven or Brahms, voices and chorus for an oratorio. What stays constant, whatever the size of the stage, is the standard of playing and the closeness between musicians and audience that a chamber-built ensemble carries with it even at full strength.
Every musician in this orchestra was chosen deliberately, not simply hired. We looked across the Greater Toronto Area for players who are exceptional at their craft — and just as important, for people we genuinely wanted in the room: generous, warm, easy to work with, the kind of colleagues who make each other better. What you hear on stage is some of the best orchestral talent the GTA has to offer. What you'd find if you spent time with them offstage is exactly what you'd hope for — people as generous as their playing.
