Bandura Beyond Borders is an instrumental bandura quartet made up of close friends - Orest
Chornomaz, Ivan Dusanowskyj, Borys Ostapienko, and Oleksander Petlura which began in
2016. Over the last ten years, Bandura Beyond Borders has performed at various cultural and
music festivals, celebrations, and fundraisers across Ontario and New York, and has
represented Canada at the International Bandura Forum in 2018 in Kyiv, Ukraine, where they
performed at the Ukrainian National Academy of Music.
The quartet’s artistic mission is to present the bandura from a new and unique perspective,
showcasing it as a versatile and expressive instrument that can excel in a variety of musical
styles.
This September, Bandura Beyond Borders has released its first studio album, Departure, a
collection of compositions the quartet has performed in the early years of its existence. These
songs reflect their love of playing the bandura together as lifelong and cherished friends for over
a decade. They also symbolize the quartet’s gradual transition from a traditional Ukrainian
repertoire to a more versatile and contemporary one - their departure beyond borders.
